The Peruvian law firm Campos / Arbitration and Infrastructure (CAI) has promoted Carlos Diez to partner. With his arrival, the firm now has four partners, joining Alex Campos, Rodrigo Urrutia, and Carla De Los Santos. This promotion strengthens the firm’s leadership structure, enabling it to handle disputes and critical decisions in construction and infrastructure projects.
Diez joined CAI in 2015 and has built his career at the firm around complex disputes in the construction industry. His practice focuses on claims for delays and interruptions, critical path analysis, FIDIC and NEC contracts in public works, dispute resolution boards, and ICC arbitration, primarily for international construction groups. Chambers & Partners has recognized him as a Promising Associate for six consecutive years, and he is listed on the Lexology Index in the construction category.
His promotion is also the story of CAI’s growth. When Diez joined the firm in 2015, the office was much smaller. Since then, CAI has grown to its current size, and he has grown along with it: he completed his training at the firm, earned an LL.M. from Georgetown University, and returned in 2023 as a senior associate to lead his own team. His appointment is not the result of an external hire, but rather a career path developed entirely within the firm.
“Carlos not only graduated according to our way of understanding the profession, but also contributed to shaping it, with values that are now part of the studio’s work: close client relationships, attention to detail, and the ability to find new solutions to complex problems,” said Alex Campos, founding partner of CAI.
This way of working has particularly shaped Diez’s practice in projects that go through critical moments. In these scenarios, his approach seeks to transcend strictly legal discussions and understand how the contract, engineering, economic variables, and decisions that can alter the course of a dispute interact.
For CAI, the company’s expansion responds to the realities of its market. In construction and infrastructure, legal, technical, financial, and operational issues often converge, and a larger company allows for the union of diverse experiences and perspectives around a shared responsibility with the client, with a greater capacity to anticipate scenarios and support more complex decisions.
“The different experiences and perspectives allow us to test hypotheses from various angles, while maintaining the same approach to serving the client and making complex decisions,” said Carla De Los Santos, partner at CAI, for whom this complementarity is an important part of the company’s next stage.
The addition of a fourth partner marks a new stage for CAI. More than simply expanding its structure, the firm seeks to deepen its approach, where specialization, common sense, and close client relationships allow it to transform complex situations into better decision-making alternatives for its clients. Diez summarizes this based on the experience that has shaped much of his practice: “Over time, I’ve understood that clients don’t just need a legal solution. They need to regain control and have options again.”
