Some law firms speak of innovation as a trend. Others treat it as a tool. Pedro Rueda places it on a different plane: as an enabler — not a substitute for the lawyer, but a catalyst for professional judgement.

From his position as co-managing partner at Araoz & Rueda, his vision combines strategic prudence with selective ambition. He speaks not of geographical expansion, but of consolidation. He is not preoccupied with volume, but with maintaining a balance between efficiency, quality and sustainable profitability. And when asked about leadership, he does not resort to abstract formulas: he emphasises consistency, culture and people.

This conversation forms part of Leaders 2026: Vision and Challenges of Spanish Law Firms, a survey examining how managing partners envisage the future of the legal sector. In Rueda’s case, the focus is not on noise, but on direction.

AI as an enabler, not a surrogate

For Araoz & Rueda, the integration of artificial intelligence is a deliberate process. It is not a matter of adopting technology in response to competitive pressure, but of understanding where it genuinely adds value.

“For our firm, AI is a key enabler for improving efficiency in repetitive tasks,” he explains. The key lies in a hybrid model: technology and professional judgement working in tandem.

“We are committed to hybrid models in which technology enhances the lawyer’s judgement, guaranteeing quality, traceability and security in multidisciplinary services, while never replacing expert advice.”

In a firm operating in complex, cross-functional environments, traceability and quality control are non-negotiable. AI may free up time, but that time must be reinvested in strategic analysis and meaningful client support. That is the equation.

Legal specialisation and a 360º business vision

If asked to identify the firm’s principal strategic commitment for 2026, Rueda does not point to a specific tool, but to a combination of capabilities.

“Our approach is to combine legal expertise, legal technology and a 360º business vision in our advisory services,” he says. The ambition is not merely to achieve technical excellence, but to deliver solutions that are “agile, predictive and consistently aligned with the specific business and sector.”

Clients no longer seek generic answers or impeccably drafted reports disconnected from their operational reality. They expect commercial understanding, foresight and the ability to translate regulation into strategy. Araoz & Rueda intends to compete from this position: at the intersection of technical rigour and business acumen.

2026: more regulation, higher standards, greater scrutiny

The macroeconomic and regulatory landscape Rueda anticipates for 2026 is demanding: more regulation, tighter oversight and increased pressure in areas such as compliance and sustainability.

“We anticipate a more demanding and rapidly evolving regulatory environment, with a strong focus on compliance, sustainability and risk control,” he notes.

The firm’s response is not to expand its structure, but to reinforce its model: specialised, tailor-made advice, with “real-time partner involvement in every matter” and constant adaptation to the market and to clients’ businesses. All this, he adds, is achieved “without losing sight of cost efficiency, which we consistently seek to align with their needs.”

At a time when many firms are contemplating territorial expansion, the position is clear: supporting clients in investment processes and cross-border transactions, yes; opening new offices, no. There are no plans for geographical expansion in the short term. The priority is depth, not dispersion.

Volume without loss of quality

One of the major challenges today is managing high-volume practices without eroding quality. The formula Rueda outlines combines intelligent automation, process standardisation and specialised teams. “This allows us to absorb peaks in workload in specific areas without compromising quality.”

Here, technology is not merely a question of efficiency; it is a means of safeguarding technical standards. And those standards, ultimately, underpin the firm’s reputation.

The areas that will define 2026

If certain practice areas are set to see significant growth, Rueda is unequivocal: regulatory compliance, AI regulation and data protection.

“In 2026, we anticipate significant growth in areas related to regulatory compliance, AI regulation and data protection, which will become more demanding and more recurrent.”

The team is preparing through continuous training and the recruitment of increasingly multidisciplinary profiles. Technology regulation is no longer solely a legal matter; it requires technical understanding, commercial awareness and cross-functional coordination.

The lawyer of tomorrow

When asked about the profile of the lawyer the market will require in 2026, his response goes beyond technical excellence.

He points to a technological mindset — the ability to understand and deploy AI and legaltech tools in daily practice — combined with commercial awareness, adaptability to change and strong communication skills. The lawyer of the future does not compete with technology; they integrate it. They do not merely interpret rules; they understand their strategic impact.

Leading with consistency and active listening

The conversation inevitably turns to leadership. Here, Rueda returns to first principles.

“A good leader must have strategic vision, integrity and consistency, as well as a clear focus on people and results.”

He does not refer to charisma or formal authority. Instead, he emphasises active listening, adaptability and innovation — but, above all, consistency between words and actions.

Throughout his career, he explains, he has cultivated these qualities by promoting multidisciplinary collaboration, continuous training and leadership grounded in proximity to teams. “That closeness inspires, motivates and aligns everyone with the firm’s strategic objectives.”

In a market shaped by growth pressures, regulatory demands and technological transformation, culture becomes the anchor.

Within the Leaders 2026 special, Pedro Rueda’s perspective echoes a recurring theme among managing partners: the market will be more demanding, more technological and more regulated. The differentiating factor, however, will not be limited to who adopts the best tools, but to who preserves sound judgement.

Araoz & Rueda do not envisage 2026 as a year of disruption, but of strategic consolidation: integrating AI without losing sight of core principles; specialising without disconnecting from business realities; growing without undermining profitability; managing volume without diluting quality; and leading without sacrificing coherence.

Perhaps therein lies the true innovative challenge: sustaining identity and culture in an environment that continues to accelerate.

Technology may drive growth. The market may exert pressure. Regulation may intensify. Ultimately, however, it is people — and the consistency of those who lead them — that determine whether a firm merely expands or genuinely consolidates its position.
