Mexico City placed a Green Bond on the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) for 3 billion pesos (US$166 million), the largest ever issued by the capital’s government. This historic operation supports the city’s sustainable urban infrastructure strategy.
The bond complies with Mexico City’s SDG-aligned financial framework, and the funds will be used to develop two new Cablebús lines in Álvaro Obregón, Magdalena Contreras, Metro Mixcoac, and the Milpa Alta corridor in Tláhuac, projects considered strategic for strengthening sustainable mobility.
The Jones Day team, led by Carlos Sámano and Arturo de la Parra, advised the Mexico City government and designed and implemented the capital markets framework through which Mexico City can issue securities in the Mexican market.
The firm also advised on the financing structure and placement, which incorporates a loan with Banco Santander.
Roberto Torres, from Jones Day’s Government Regulation team, together with Santander’s ESG team, supported the development of Mexico City’s SDG-aligned framework.
In addition to Sámano, de la Parra, and Torres, the Jones Day team included Luisa Tagle and Santiago Sinde. All work in the firm’s Mexico City office.
The president of the Mexican Stock Exchange group, Marcos Martínez Gavica, said, “The rating was ‘AAA’ and demand was two to one. This confirms investor interest and confidence and underscores the relevance of the projects to be financed,” he added.
In this regard, he noted that this bond will promote projects with tangible environmental benefits, foster solutions that will improve the quality of life for millions of people, and open new opportunities for the sustainable development of the capital.
