KPMG Abogados strengthens its Competition practice with the addition of Mercedes Segoviano, from Deloitte, as its new head

By Heidi Maldonado

KPMG Abogados announced the addition of Mercedes Segoviano as the new head of the Competition area, thus reinforcing the firm’s position in comprehensive advice on competition law, merger control, state aid and proceedings before the Spanish and European authorities.

Mercedes has a distinguished international career developed at leading firms and organizations such as Deloitte Legal, King & Wood Mallesons, WilmerHale, and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition. Throughout her career, she has advised national and multinational clients on merger control proceedings before the European Commission and the CNMC (Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission), on the analysis and processing of foreign direct investments before the Spanish authorities, and on the management of horizontal and vertical agreements, cartel investigations, leniency programs, and sanction proceedings. She has also participated in complex analyses of state aid and the assessment of its compatibility with applicable European regulations, in addition to leading the implementation of competition compliance programs and providing specialized training for organizations in various sectors.

Prior to joining KPMG Abogados, she served as Head of Competition and EU Law at Deloitte Legal Spain, where she managed merger control operations and highly complex proceedings at both the national and European levels. Her academic background includes a law degree from the University of Valladolid, an LL.M. in European Law from the Université Catholique de Louvain, and an LL.M. from the University of California, Berkeley, where she also specialized in Law and Technology. She has been recognized on several occasions by Best Lawyers and has numerous publications on competition, regulated markets, and compliance.

Alberto Estrelles, managing partner of KPMG Abogados, stated that “the addition of Mercedes represents an important step in our commitment to consolidating the Competition practice area – part of the Regulatory, Administrative and Competition practice and led by Carmen Mulet – which is highly strategic for our clients. Her experience in complex cases before the European Commission and the CNMC, combined with her technical expertise and international background, will decisively contribute to further strengthening our capabilities in a key practice area in the current regulatory environment.”
