The Board of Professional Partners has agreed to appoint Jesús Gómez Montero as an Honorary Partner of Elzaburu in recognition of his outstanding professional career in the field of industrial and intellectual property and his close association with the firm for more than 24 years.

Throughout his career, he has both witnessed and played a decisive role in many of the key developments that have shaped the current regulatory framework and legal ecosystem governing our sector.”

Professional Background
Jesús Gómez Montero holds a law degree from the University of Santiago de Compostela. In 1980, he passed the competitive examination for entry into the Legal Corps of the Industrial Property Registry — now the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) — where he actively participated in the legislative process that aligned Spanish industrial property legislation with European standards. During this period, he contributed to key legislative milestones, including the 1986 Patents Act, the 1988 Trademarks Act and the 1988 Act on the Legal Protection of Semiconductor Products.
He also took part in working groups at the European Union, the European Patent Office (EPO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), contributing to initiatives such as the Trademark Directive, the Community Trade Mark Regulation, the revision of the European Patent Convention (Munich Convention) and the Protocol to the Madrid Agreement. As a WIPO expert, he collaborated on projects to modernise industrial property offices in several Latin American countries.
In 1995, he joined Elzaburu, becoming a partner in 1996, and remained with the firm until 2019. His practice focused primarily on trade marks, managing strategic portfolios for national and international companies. Within the firm, he also served as Head of the International Department, fostering close relationships with colleagues worldwide and actively participating in international conferences.
Alongside his professional practice, he maintained a significant academic and training commitment. Between 1981 and 2017, he was Professor of Advertising Law at the Faculty of Information Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid. At Elzaburu, he chaired the Training Committee and served on the Editorial Committee, promoting continuing professional development and coordinating the firm’s contributions to international legal publications.
He is currently a member of the Academic Committee of the Ibero-American Journal of Intellectual Property, is registered with the Madrid Bar Association as a non-practising lawyer, and serves as Secretary of Galician Jurists in Madrid (IURISGAMA).
