Client sophistication, mounting pressure on profitability and rapid technological acceleration are reshaping the Brazilian legal market. The Brazilian legal market enters 2026 amid a profound structural transformation. A combination of moderate economic growth, increasingly sophisticated corporate clients, sustained pressure on margins and the accelerating integration of technology is forcing large law firms to reassess their business models, internal structures and leadership approaches.

This is the starting point of the report “Brazil in 2026 and the New Market Logic: the Big Law Perspective”, a first collective analysis bringing together the views of managing partners from the country’s leading firms on the forces reshaping the sector.

Building on that shared diagnosis, we are now launching a series of individual interviews to explore in greater depth the strategic thinking behind those perspectives. Over the coming days, we will publish in-depth conversations with each of the managing partners who contributed to the initial analysis, seeking to understand how market insights are being translated into concrete decisions on leadership, investment, organisation and culture.

Our first guest is Alexandre Gossn Barreto, managing partner of Cescon Barrieu and one of the most influential voices in the Brazilian legal market. In this interview, he outlines his vision of the law firm as a legal intelligence centre, reflects on the real impact of technological innovation, examines the evolution of the corporate client and discusses the role of leadership in an increasingly complex and demanding environment.

Beyond technical excellence: the firm as an intelligence hub

For Alexandre Gossn Barreto, the debate about the future of the legal profession has moved well beyond growth or the mere adoption of technology. The true competitive advantage, he argues, will lie in firms’ ability to interpret complex environments and act with collective intelligence.

“Our primary objective is to consolidate Cescon Barrieu as a genuine centre of legal intelligence, capable of acting with leadership, insight and agility in response to our clients’ needs”.

This is not rhetorical positioning. It implies the integration of technical excellence, business judgement and coordinated partner action, without compromising rigour or legal certainty. In a market of growing sophistication, innovating without a clear strategic framework can be as risky as resisting change altogether.

Innovation, data and legal certainty

Investment in technology and data intelligence is one of the firm’s strategic pillars. Cescon Barrieu has advanced in embedding digital tools into its core legal processes, while strengthening data governance and information security.

“The future of the legal profession will belong to those who can integrate technical legal depth, strategic business vision and technological intelligence”.

Technology, Barreto stresses, does not replace professional judgement; rather, it reshapes how legal services are delivered -enabling greater efficiency, enhanced predictability and closer alignment with clients’ strategic objectives.

A more sophisticated client, a more demanding firm

The corporate client profile has evolved markedly. Today’s clients expect measurable outcomes, cost discipline and a deep understanding of their industry and regulatory environment. In-house legal teams have become strategic actors within organisations, raising expectations of external counsel.

“Clients are no longer looking solely for technical excellence. They expect predictability, efficiency and close engagement grounded in a real understanding of the business”.

As a result, the lawyer–client relationship becomes strategic rather than transactional. Law firms move from reactive service providers to trusted partners capable of anticipating risk and supporting complex decision-making.

Rainmakers 2026: leadership, context and culture

In an increasingly competitive market, the role of business-originating partners is also evolving. According to Barreto, the rainmakers of 2026 will need to combine commercial capability with contextual awareness and the ability to foster internal integration.

“Acting as a legal intelligence centre requires professionals who can read complex scenarios, build long-term relationships and mobilise internal talent”.

Emotional intelligence, adaptability and an understanding of social and organisational dynamics, he adds, will be as critical as technical expertise.

Strategic sectors, risks and opportunities

Against a backdrop of moderate economic growth, Barreto identifies clear opportunities in infrastructure, energy, natural resources, the digital economy, fintech and financial services. Compliance and corporate sustainability are also set to gain further regulatory and strategic relevance.

At the same time, a persistently high interest-rate environment continues to weigh on credit and investment, driving increased demand for complex restructurings and high-stakes litigation.

Talent, diversity and leadership by example

Talent development is another cornerstone of Cescon Barrieu’s strategy. The firm has invested in structured leadership training programmes and maintains a strong female presence in decision-making roles.

Beyond formal initiatives, however, Barreto emphasises the importance of everyday leadership.

“Culture is built through example, not rhetoric. When actions fail to match words, trust is lost.”

The challenge, he explains, is to reconcile high performance and innovation with individual well-being, without allowing a culture of permanent burnout to take hold.

For Alexandre Gossn Barreto, 2026 is not a year for automatic responses or defensive growth. It is a moment that calls for leadership grounded in sound judgement, environmental awareness and consistency between discourse and decision-making. In a more sophisticated legal market with lower tolerance for error, competitive advantage no longer lies in size or speed, but in the quality of strategic judgement.

As he concludes:

“The firms that will remain relevant are those capable of integrating technical rigour, business vision and technological intelligence without losing their identity or culture”.

The legal profession Barreto describes is not driven by urgency, but by informed reflection, one that accepts complexity as intrinsic to the craft and understands leadership as a responsibility sustained over time. In this balance, between innovation and legal certainty, ambition and sound judgement, lies the enduring relevance of Brazil’s leading law firms.
