He has specialized knowledge in various sectors, including financial services, telecommunications, hospitality, retail, food distribution and production, manufacturing, and education.
Founding partner of Godínez Legal, he serves as an advisor and litigator specializing in labor and social security law, representing national and multinational companies, including some of the largest and most influential employers in Costa Rica and the region.
His practice includes advising on corporate restructuring processes, conducting labor due diligence in mergers and acquisitions, the management of complex litigation with significant financial or reputational risks, the restructuring of compensation systems for senior management, the prevention of contingencies in outsourcing or subcontracting schemes, the termination of highly complex employment contracts, and the management of union relations and collective bargaining processes.
He previously served as a Labor Judge on the Court of Appeals and as an Associate Justice of the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of Costa Rica.
He has acted as an external consultant for various national and international government entities, including the Canadian Ministry of Labor, the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration, and United Nations agencies such as the International Labor Organization (ILO), UNICEF, and ECLAC.
He has done extensive work for the ILO, both as an official and as an external consultant, participating in projects in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and the Dominican Republic.
For the Canadian Ministry of Labor, he conducted a comprehensive assessment of compliance with key labor standards in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Belize, and the Dominican Republic, in the context of negotiations for a free trade agreement with Canada.
He was also a member of the ILO team responsible for evaluating labor relations systems in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Panama, in the context of negotiations for a free trade agreement between those countries and the United States.
He served as president of the Costa Rican Association of Labor Law and Social Security and as second vice president of the Ibero-American Academy of Labor Law and Social Security.
He is the author of six books and more than sixty academic publications on labor law and social security.
He holds a law degree from the University of Costa Rica and a doctorate in law from the Complutense University of Madrid. He is currently a professor and coordinator of the Labor Law Department at the University of Costa Rica Law School.
In 1998, he received the Alberto Brenes Córdoba Award, given by the Costa Rican Bar Association to the best legal work of the year.
