Mexico, one of the countries with the most cyberattacks in Latin America: secure technology as the cornerstone of data protection

By Heidi Maldonado

On Data Protection Day, celebrated this January 28, Mexico faces one of the most complex cybersecurity scenarios in the region. Information from the National Cyber Incident Response Center (CERT-MX), along with reports from the Cybersecurity Program of the Organization of American States (OAS), consistently ranks the country among those most affected by cyberattacks and attempted attacks in Latin America, particularly those related to data theft, unauthorized access, and breaches of corporate systems.

Regional analyses conducted by the OAS and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) indicate that Mexico accounts for a significant proportion of cybersecurity incidents reported in Latin America, driven by the rapid digitization of processes, the adoption of cloud services, and the increasing use of sensitive data by public and private organizations. In this context, professional and corporate firms have become strategic targets due to the critical value of the information they manage.

According to Maximiliano Amor, Business Unit Director at LemonTech, this environment is forcing organizations to rethink their technology strategy with a proactive approach. “Data protection is no longer just a matter of regulatory compliance; it’s a core component of business continuity and the trust that companies build with their clients”, he explained.

Looking ahead to 2026, Amor identifies five main challenges for Mexican firms: the increasing sophistication of cyberattacks, the shortage of specialized cybersecurity talent, the secure integration of artificial intelligence, compliance with regulations on the protection of personal data, and the strengthening of an organizational cybersecurity culture, aligned with international standards and best practices.

Regarding the level of technological maturity, assessments by the IDB and the OAS place Mexico among the countries with the highest digital adoption in the region, although with relevant gaps between large organizations and medium-sized firms.

These studies also indicate that most Mexican companies recognize the need to strengthen their data protection and cybersecurity capabilities in the face of increased incidents and greater regulatory oversight by authorities such as the INAI.

“The value of technology lies in its correct implementation and the discipline with which information is managed. In that sense, the success factor lies not only in the adoption of digital tools, but in their alignment with the business strategy, clear access policies, continuous training, and a comprehensive vision of data protection”, Amor points out.

On Data Protection Day 2026, the Mexican landscape reinforces a key message: in one of the most cyberattacked countries in Latin America, information security is a strategic asset. The combination of certified technology, robust processes, and a prevention-oriented organizational culture will be crucial to meeting the challenges of today’s digital environment.
