Clio, the world’s leading firm in legal artificial intelligence, launched its complete platform in Spain for the first time on September 9th, a move the company describes as “a homecoming” rather than simply entering a new market. The launch includes two products, Clio Manage and Clio Work, which allow a law firm to manage both its business operations and the practice of law itself from a single system; something that, according to Clio, no Spanish firm has had available until now.
The acquisition culminates a process that began over a year ago, when Clio acquired vLex for $1 billion—the largest technology acquisition in Spanish history—and involved six months of joint integration between the two companies to incorporate vLex’s legal database directly into Clio’s platform. This database, built over 25 years in Barcelona, brings together jurisprudence, legislation, and legal documentation from dozens of countries in a single, verified, and searchable source used by lawyers, courts, and researchers worldwide; work that, Clio maintains, quietly shaped much of today’s legal AI long before the concept became popular in the sector.
Clio Manage covers case management, billing, scheduling, and client communication; Clio Work is where the actual legal work—document drafting, case law research, and pleading preparation—is executed, supported by vLex’s verified data. This second component relies on Vincent, vLex’s AI that combines advanced language models with over one billion legal documents from more than 100 countries, and which the company highlights for its cross-jurisdictional reasoning and accuracy in contract review and risk detection.
“This is both a homecoming and a launch in itself,” said Jack Newton, CEO and founder of Clio. “vLex spent 25 years building trusted legal data right here in Spain, and that work quietly shaped legal AI far beyond the country’s borders.
