Madrid becomes the seventh European headquarters of Anthropic, the San Francisco-based US company that develops Claude, following London, Dublin, Paris, Zurich, Munich, and Milan. According to its Economic Index, Spain has a Claude usage rate 2.7 times higher than would be expected based on its population size, a figure the company cites as the reason for the opening.
Cristina Pitarch heads the new office. She brings over 15 years of experience in the technology sector – with Google, Salesforce, and Informatica – and most recently served as Managing Director for EMEA at Google Cloud Security.
In this sense, Pitarch argues that Spain is not just a local market: he describes it as a base to lead AI security in southern Europe and, from there, “a benchmark for the entire Spanish-speaking world.”
The reference clients that Anthropic makes public are financial and infrastructure: Santander, CaixaBank and BBVA in banking; Telefónica, in software development and vulnerability detection; Ferrovial, in civil engineering; Amadeus, in travel information; Indra and Konecta.
The opening includes an agreement with ISDI Business School to support the “Ambassadors” initiative, aimed at local developers and founders. Madrid already has eight ambassadors from that community.
